Hardwood floor discolored because of oriental rugs

Posted in Advice at 8:33 am by Administrator

dear mike.

we are working on a home in caledonia and the hardwood floor looks pretty good. the former homeowner took good care of it. but what we are seeing is where they had oriental rugs laid out on the master room floor an the floor is lighter where the rugs were. can we fix this with something? we were told the floors were refinished in 2004 and the wood is red oak with bonamega (?) finish.

thanks j

This is not a huge problem as the floor is red oak. The shadow can be lightened by a complete refinish to where it is barely visible. If the floor is stained a medium to dark color, the shadow line will be negligible.

Use of a UV rated finish will help prevent this in the future. Street Shoe by Basic is well known for this.

If you do not stain the floors the shadow lines will blend in over a period of 6-12 months as the now exposed wood patinas with the exposure to sunlight.

When you are ready to start the project, please feel free to call me.
